Miller JV Outlast Neal

Round one of the JV version of the Battle of Murder Creek took place in East Brewton Last Night, with the JV tigers coming out on top 24-12. The game was hard fought battle from beginning to end. The 7th graders started off the night with a 16 – 0 shutout of Neal. On the second play from Scrimmage Grant Youngblood outraced everyone to the end zone for the first score and added the 2-point conversion. Youngblood scored both TD’s  in the 7th grade game, with other runs by Markil Mitchell and Jared Cooper.

The 8th grade game began with Miller winning the toss and deferring to the 2nd half. We kicked off to Neal and they returned it to the 50-yard line. Neal marched the ball down to our 3-yard line and was 1st and goal from there. We called a time out to rally the troops, and the defense held them on 4 plays and made them turn the ball over on downs. After an awesome goal line stand, we took the ball 97 yards for the score, and added the 2 point conversion to make it 8-0 with 2:32 to go in the first quarter.

The Touchdown came on a run by Mchenry Coleman and the extra point was good on a pass to Kyle Davis. Coleman added another touchdown later in the 2nd quarter and the extra point was good to make the score 16 –6 at halftime. The third and final score for Miller came in the 4th quarter when Youngblood broke 4 tackles and scored from 28 yards out. The extra point was added making the score 24-6. The final score of the game came when Neal scored with 1 minute to go, the extra point was no good making the final score 24 – 6 in favor of the JV Tigers.

It always great when you battle it out in a hard fought game and come out on top, but it is especially sweet when the victory comes over your neighbor from across the creek. GO Tigers.

The TR Miller JV football team took the field last Thursday night against Straughn. It had been a long time since August 3rd when practice began and we were tired of hitting one another and needed to line up against someone else. The 7th graders started the game off with an 8 – 0 victory after a 54 yard run by Grant Youngblood, who also scored the 2 point conversion. The 8th graders won the toss and elected to defer to the second half and kicked to Straughn.

Straughn started their drive off on their own 40-yard line and drove the length of the field to take the lead 8- 0. The JV tigers started their drive on their own 42-yard line and run 2 plays before the quarter ended. With 6 minutes to go before half-time McHenry Coleman ran for 17 yards for the score, and Jones Manning added the 2pt. Conversion to tie the score 8-8. Straughn started their next drive at their own 20 yard line and ran 80 yards for their 2nd score, the extra point was no good the score with 3 minutes to go in the half Straughn led 14-8.

The JV tigers started their next possession on the 50-yard line after a good kick return. Two plays later McHenry Coleman ran in it from 40 yards out, and the extra point was no good. The half ended tied 14-14. Millers JV tigers received the ball in the 3rd quarter, and started the next drive at the 50-yard line due to an unsuccessful onside kick attempt by Straughn. Eight plays later a screen pass to Trae Walker was the 3rd score of the night to make the score 20-14. The extra point was no good.

With 5:30 left to go in the game Kyle Davis scored Millers last score of the night on a 10 yard run up the middle through a huge hole opened up by Trin Miller, Hunter Harp, Chris Jones and James Peach. Straughn added one more score, but it proved to be their last with the final score being Millers JV 28 Straughn JV 20. The game was a back and forth battle all night but the young tigers came out on top. The kids showed a lot of discipline and character to battle back and forth and come on top. The JV tigers will take on Neal in East Brewton Next Thursday night at 6:00 pm.

Thursday, August 5th was the first day of full pads at practice and we took some footage of the players practicing. "It's a lot different from being in shorts," says T.R. Miller senior Dylan Bell.  It was a hot day and the players had to really push themselves, but they made it through. Here is some footage from the practice:

The T.R. Miller Tigers will hold their first practice in full pads on Thursday, August 5th at 5:00 PM.  The Tigers worked Monday and Tuesday morning in weather Coach Jamie Riggs called "pretty hot".  Riggs said he thought both coaches and players were looking forward to putting on the pads.  "We have been in shorts throughout the summer and I think everyone is ready for a change."  The varsity Tigers are scheduled to hold a short scrimmage to end the week on Friday at the end of practice.  "That's when we will find out who is ready to play and who is not," said Riggs.  The Tigers open the season on August 27th at Escambia County.

Wednesday, after practice the football players enjoyed a feast of watermelons to cool themselves off. Coach Edge provided this snack for the entire team to enjoy; however, Coach Edge was not there to enjoy the snack because he had a meeting to attend that morning.  The football players played around and had lots of fun while eating the melons.  We took some footage of them playing around.  Check it out below:
