The TR Miller JV football team ended their Spring Training with a Red and white scrimmage Wednesday afternoon. It proved to be a defensive struggle with the final score of Red 12 White 8. The scrimmage concluded 6 days of practice in which the 6th and 7th graders were taught basic fundamentals and were given the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of their coaches, parents, and other relatives.

The day was highlighted when 6th grader Grant Youngblood fumbled a pitch, picked it up and scored from 60 yards out. Other players of notable mention were Jones Manning, Corey Carter, McHenry Coleman, Todd Mayo, Kellyn Winn, Tray Walker and Kyle Davis had several impressive runs and catches. The entire offensive and defensive line did an awesome job of knowing their assignments and making their blocks. I was especially proud of their effort and attitude to learn and be enthusiastic during spring practice.

There are several other players who will make an impact the upcoming season; Chris Jones, James Peach, Ronald Young, Trin Miller will anchor the offensive line the upcoming season. Several 6th graders will contribute next year as well. Tripp Floyd, Jake Najor, Cole Blackmon, Ethan Tyree, and Jared Cooper all had great spring games as well.

I am so excited about next fall’s TR Miller JV football team and the great things that are in store. I am looking forward to continuing where last years undefeated team left off. As always “It Great to be a Miller Tiger”.

BMS SPRING TRAINING REPORT

The T.R. Miller Tiger Football team concluded their first week of spring football practice with some scrimmage work on Friday afternoon.  T.R. Miller football coach Jamie Riggs greeted some 84 candidates for the team with fundamental drills for the first days of practice.  Coach Riggs said the first few days were "fine" and the players had given a good effort.  But he was very pleased with his upcoming seniors.  "They have had a great attitude and have shown some real toughness this week.  We are still lifting and some are involved in baseball practice, but they have had excellent enthusiasm and are starting to become the leaders we need them to be. "  Coach Riggs said that the Tigers are looking to shore up some holes on defense due to graduation and the spring scrimmage work will answer a lot of questions.  "Some will grow up and show they are ready to play and some probably won't.  And someone we are not expecting will come out of no where to earn some playng time. "  Riggs also is looking to see some players step up at receiver and he has several candidates vying for those spots.  Included in that group is last year's back up QB Conner Denton who is splitting time between QB and WR as well as playing defense.  "We are just a little young there.....I think they will catch on soon.  We are also missing some receivers who are still playing basketball so it will help us when they return."

Coach Riggs did say that one player that caught his eye in the scrimmage on Friday is upcoming sophomore linebacker D.J. Smith.  Smith made several tackles and his hustle was evident to all. " He played very hard and football starts with playing hard," Riggs said.  "He still has a long way to go but he is catching my eye with his early play."  Riggs also had praise for upcoming senior defensive lineman Bryant Jernigan.  "He plays hard and is slowly becoming one of our better defensive players.  He has also blocked well.  Bryant just gives a good effort at everything he does."

T.R. MIller will practice all five days next week before concluding with their annual Red-White Game on Tuesday, February 16, at 6:00 PM.

TIGERS CONCLUDE 1ST WEEK OF SPRING PRACTICE

The T.R. MIller Tigers finished their 2010 spring football practice with a 38-26 victory for the Red team in the annual Red-White Spring Football game.  The varsity played the first and last 16 minutes of the game with the B team playing 24 minutes in the middle.  There was no kicking in the game. T.R. Miller football Coach Jamie Riggs was pleased with the  spring practice effort of the Tigers and the hard hitting game that climaxed the practices. "I thought it was a very physical game particularly with our offensive and defensive lines.  I wasn't pleased with the turnovers (5) in the game but I believe some good defensive plays were responsible for some of that.  But I believe it was one of the better spring practices we have had here in a long time."

The White team opened the game with a 12 play, 65 yard drive capped by a 15 yard TD pass from Wil Riggs to senior tight end Ryland Dixon.  LB Horatio Matthews stopped the run for 2 points and the White lead 6-0.  When the Red team got the ball, senior running back David Ikner took over. He had runs of 8 and 9 yards and two pass receptions from Conner Denton for 22 yards.  A brilliant 11 yard run by Anthony Herbert was good for a TD but the 2 pt conversion run was stopped by Kameron Winn,  Eric Maye and freshman defensive tackle Cardarius Fountain.  After the White team punted and the the Red team gave up a fumble to junior Louis Miller,  Red team defenders Shan Fleming and Hunter Franklin sacked Riggs to force a second consecutive White punt.  In the middle of the Red team drive, the B team took over.  The Red "B" team used the running of Dominique Jackson and Cameron Coleman to finish the drive. Jackson scored on a 10 yard counter run and Coleman converted the PAT with a strong run to give the Red team a 14-6 lead.

The White team's Dedrionne Lee broke a 34 yard run and Eric Maye a 20 yard run to get the White team moving.  Lee scored from 3 yards out and the PAT was no good as the White closed the lead to 14-12.  The Red team countered with a 35 yard completion from sophomore Kevin Davis to freshman Kadarius Jones to get close,  but the Reds fumbled going in and the White team took over on the 2 yard line.  Jamal Spears broke a 52 yard run down the sideline but Alec Robinson intercepted for the Red team to halt the drive.  Dominique Jackson then scored on a 50 yard run behind great blocks by Caleb Stewart and Cameron Coleman. Coleman's 2 point run gave the Red a 22-12 lead.

The White team responded with a 15 play drive as the varsity took over for the last 5 plays.  Riggs' TD run cut the lead to 22-18.  David Ikner got rolling again for the Red team on runs of 11 and 17 yards.  Sophomore Kevin Davis hit senior Dakota Shultz who tight roped down the sideline for a score.  Anthony Herbert scored the 2 points behind the block of Caleb McAnally and the Red rushed to a 30-18 lead.  The White team responded with a nine play drive.  Wil Riggs hit junior Ricky Curry with a 24 yard TD pass and the White was close again at 30-26.  With four minutes left in the game, the Red team protected their lead behind the running of seniors Ikner and Herbert.  A Conner Denton pass to sophomore Ryan Hunt from 11 yards out capped the scoring for the night.  Herbert's interception of a Riggs pass ended the game.

" I know that Horatio Matthews made some great plays at linebacker tonight and Dylan Bell was a force at outside linebacker. " said Coach Riggs.  We has several other guys who struck some licks.  We know that Jaren Jackson can play safety or linebacker.  We still have a long way to go but we have the summer and fall practice to get better on defense.  I know we have some players and coaches who are going to work hard at it."  The offensive line was certainly a strength this spring. " Our senior linemen.....Couture, Hines, Kast, Dixon, Horton, Bell ...they will be very solid.  We have some juniors who are coming on.  We have six months to improve ourselves physically.  We have to develop some receivers this summer and our senior backs who have played so much already (Riggs, Jackson, Herbert) need to be great.  I was encouraged with what I saw from David Ikner this spring.  But I like the attitude and work ethic of this team.  The key is going to be leadership and how well the seniors gather the rest of the team into the circle.  If they do, we have a chance to be competitive every Friday night."
